Bond Breaker 2.0 places you in the world of the extremely small - where you need to manipulate protons, molecules, laser light, and more to solve challenging levels. Push and pull atoms around, combine them, split them, all while avoiding obstacles. Built as a collaboration between scientists at the CaSTL research center and indie studio TestTubeGames, the game brings the joys and frustrations of physical chemistry to players of all ages. The game is out on iPhone, Android, and the web, and as always is completely and utterly free.
With more chemistry content and improved levels, the team is hoping Bond Breaker 2.0 can reach even more players. "Our target audience is everyone from people with an interest or background in science to people who like fun, or both..." says Andre Schirotzek, managing director of the Center for Chemistry at the Space Time Limit (CaSTL), a research group at UC Irvine. The wide accessibility of the game, however, doesn't mean the science isn't robust. "The mission of CaSTL, making a movie of an individual molecule as it undergoes a chemical reaction, requires cutting edge technology and science concepts," Andre continued. "Believe it or not, you will find many of them in the game."
Indie developer Andy Hall of TestTubeGames was glad to take on the challenge of pairing rigorous science and gameplay. "With a background in both physics and games, I'm always looking for ways to combine the two in interesting ways." Bond Breaker is based on an accurate simulation of chemistry at tiny scales, with atoms and molecules behaving appropriately. "By playing the game, you're really doing a hands-on experiment. That means whether you're an elementary school student or a PhD candidate, you'll be able to engage with and learn something from the game."
